Choosing the right Paint Colors for Your Home’s Interior
You’ve just finished some major renovations to your home and fixed some structural flaws that ensured keeping every room’s architectural character intact. Then it dawns on you that something isn’t quite right yet and that something is the color of the walls. Color is especially important in today’s open floor plans (dining rooms, kitchens, and living rooms are a single large, undivided space) because it helps to create focal points and separate each room.
The key is to determine which color of paint to use in order to define each of those areas. Keep in mind that color mistakes can be costly when you consider the price of a gallon of paint nowadays. Despite the fact that there are literally thousands of paint chips at your local home improvement stores, all you need to remember are 7 colors – blue, green, indigo, orange, red, violet, and yellow – the colors of the paint spectrum. There are 4 steps to creating the ideal color scheme for your home’s interior:
- Choose 3 colors from an object in each room – for example, in the living room, you can use a color from your curtains/drapes or one of your sofa’s throw pillows. Find 3 paint strips with those colors at your local home improvement store. This will give you a total of 15 to 18 colors based on 5 or 6 color samples per paint strip.
- Choose one of the colors for your walls – choose the other two for matching fabric or furnishings in the room.
- Choose colors for the adjacent areas or rooms – you can look at your original paint color strips and select a different color.
- Finally, select a fourth color for an accent – you should incorporate some of that 4th color in every room of your home. It could be used for fabric, furnishings, or trim work, whatever you prefer.
Once you’ve completed the steps above, you’re going to want to decide on the type of finish to use. Although the flat finishes that are available on the market today have better stain resistant qualities, a satin finish is usually best for interior walls because it doesn’t draw attention to any flaws or imperfections and it’s easier to clean. When it comes to door panels and molding, it’s best to use a high-gloss or semi-gloss.
And if you are not sure about the colors or brands to use, it is best to consult with the professional painting service that you have hired.
