The Challenges of painting Open Concept Rooms and 2-Story Spaces

Although most homeowners aren’t aware of this, there are certain room styles that can make the selection of the right paint color a difficult process. Consequently, the choice of color for open concept rooms and 2-strory spaces is more complex and involved. Although we have done innumerable such homes, over the years but it is a challenging job. You have to take certain factors into consideration such as “Where does this wall end and the next one start?” Here are some helpful tips where painting open concept rooms and 2-story spaces are concerned.

Open Concept Rooms

Open concept rooms and 2-story spaces have similar problems. However, there is the additional frustration of trying to make one a multi-functional space but not the other. In open concept rooms, we often see a dining area, kitchen, living room, and maybe even an office in the same space. Without the right color scheme, the area can appear to be messy. So you want colors that give the area a cohesive appearance.

Painting the trim the same color will help tie the rooms together and unify the space. When painting the walls, you should paint the connecting walls the same color. Be sure you take the amount of light the room receives, the existing furnishings, room size, and your taste preferences into consideration. What makes this so difficult is that you need to choose different colors for the same space.

2-Story Spaces

Because you have a loftier ceiling height with 2-story spaces, this creates long, tall wall spaces that make painting a difficult endeavor. A 2-story area typically lets in more light and can have an impact on the paint color chosen. For the sake of comparison, let’s look at a single story and two-story family room. Consider it the same room, only it has 2 different ceiling heights.

If you paint the single-story space a rich blue, it makes the area feel cozy and more closed in. Conversely, the 2-story space wouldn’t feel that cozy due to the additional light that enters the space and its higher ceiling. Once you’ve selected your color palette, make sure the 2-story space doesn’t have any adjacent wall space that needs to be painted the identical color.

Regardless of the area you’re planning to paint, you want to ensure that your choice of colors is used to their full advantage. Use darker colors as accents while painting most of the space in lighter colors.
